Hands-On Books

I have been a high-school science teacher for the past eighteen years.

I have also been blessed with the opportunity to teach at a school (Detroit Country Day School) where I have been given complete control of the design and implementation of the curricula for each of the classes I have taught.

As a result of this experience I have authored four course books that constitute the "Hands-On" Science series:

Physics Vol. 1, Physics Vol. 2, Geology and Oceanography.

I am not an educational theorist, but instead a pragmatist. I focus on real-time classroom activities and a holistic approach to curricular design. I design activities, monitor how the students interact and then adjust the form that the activities take to better achieve the goal of active learning.

My sense is that the classroom is a place where students should work together, and should support and assist one another in their journey through a subject. The teacher is a source of motivation, skills and conceptual techniques that are offered to students on a need to know basis, much as professionals attend seminars to learn of current developments in their respective fields.
