The Dead Sea Scrolls: A Statistical Analysis

The Dead Sea Scrolls - A Statistical Analysis.pdf

ABSTRACT

The present work offers a statistical analysis of the complete catalogue of texts found in the caves at Qumran, with particular emphasis on the distribution of titles (as representing distinct literary works) and the number of multiple copies in which each appears. Additionally, attention is focused on the distribution of languages and scripts in which these texts are written. The analytical approach is quantitative in character, differing from research that focuses on the content of the texts; being more closely related in spirit to paleographic studies. The fundamental conclusion detailed below is that the statistical structure of the complete catalogue can best be understood as having been formed from a combination of approximately 40 independent text units, where each text unit prior to being incorporated into the catalogue functioned independently as the literary repository for a traditional social unit within the Judean society of the time.
